Lessons I Learned From My Daughter's Visit: Food, Laws and Waste

It was a sunny day in Asheville, North Carolina. I was visiting my daughter who came to the US from the Philippines for work training. Leon and I were eating at a restaurant. I noticed the waitress cleaning the table next to us. I saw the half-eaten pieces of food on the table that is being thrown away.

This was not the first time I noticed this. I saw food being wasted also at the grocery store near us in Dallas not to mention the food we waste in our own kitchen and the food being wasted in tv shows like the Food Network etc.

At the store in Dallas, I noticed they throw away bulk produce just because people have put them in bags and they left them laying around in the store because they decided not to buy them. I interviewed several people working in the store and they said that they throw those away because they were told to do that. These are big bags of macadamias, pistachios etc.

 I can see that this is what is happening here;
the law prohibits returning the produce back to the container due to possible food contamination - so bulk food products in plastic containers laying around the store are being thrown away by employees to indicate they follow the company rules and regulations which the employer agreed to uphold.

We usually justify this by saying, 'the law is protecting the public from getting ill'.

In the country where I grew up, we get cookies from a cookie jar inside the small countryside stores and if we got more than what we intended to, we return it to the cookie jar and that's all there is to it. Do we get sick more than the Americans? No.

I am not saying that is better than having food laws. I am just looking at the consequence outflow of having the kind of money system that we have - based on some having more and some having less.

I also want to look at our starting point in making laws. The people who make the laws are ordinary people like us who we voted and they, like us, fear being sick too.

When we are sick we cannot work and earn money.

The laws and regulations that are being made by legislators are driven by fear. We make these laws based on fear.

The bulk food items in the US store I mentioned above were not even handled by hand. We normally take bulk food items like walnuts, almonds, pecans, macadamias etc. from the bulk containers using a big spoon. We then put them in plastic containers to bring home.

Most of the time, the reason we leave some of the food items in the store - the ones we initially thought of buying, is because we do not have enough money to pay for them. We can correct this by being aware of how much money we have when we enter the store and being aware of what we need to buy.

A health care system that will pay for our hospitalization when we get sick that is available to all from birth to death is not in place. We have to put this in. This is the reason why we fear being sick - because it costs money.

We can restructure our ecosystem of money so that we can make laws and regulations that will support what is mutually beneficial for all

We need a  living income that will give everyone the basic necessities we need plus in addition to that, it will not hurt to have additional income to spend to pay for things we enjoy doing.

Where are we going to get the money to implement this?

There are many ways to do this, but one option is, we can get some money from the corporations who get produce or raw materials from the earth - raw materials that the earth intended to give all of us equally. They can get money for the upkeep of the corporation but the rest of the profit should be given to all of us for whom the earth gave it to.

We cannot accept and allow some children NOT to eat (from this country or another country) while some waste food and throw them away. We cannot just give a little bit to others. We are all here on earth. We all eat from the earth. We breathe the same air. We cannot just give them a little bit through charity. This is diminishing the life that is equal in all of us.

We have to give others equal shares.
We are equal share-holders to what the earth gives us.

Pacquiao and The Tax Woman

In the News:

MANILA – Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Henares criticized the proposed bill seeking to give Sarangani congressman and boxing champion Manny Pacquiao a lifetime tax exemption, calling it “unconstitutional.”
Henares said giving Pacquiao a lifetime tax break for his accomplishments as a boxer will be unfair to other taxpayers.
“There should be a valid classification and everyone who is similarly situated should be accorded the same privilege. We have other national heroes, why aren’t we giving them the same privilege?” she told ANC on Thursday.
She said honoring Pacquiao with the privilege may also expose the country’s skewed value system, which venerates icons and not the soldiers who risk life and limb to protect and defend the country.
“Ito ang magiging tanong: kung ako ay sundalo, eh bakit ako walang exemption eh ang puhunan ko ay buhay ko? Kung hindi naman public sector ang papag-usapan natin, sasabihin ng mga lineman, eh bakit ako hindi ako in-exempt eh tinataya ko ang buhay ko kapag nagre-repair ako ng electric lines. Pero ‘yung mga athlete, hindi naman nila tinataya ang buhay nila for the benefit of other people, it’s for themselves,” she said in a separate interview on dzMM.
The tax exemption for Pacquiao was proposed by Valenzuela City Rep. Magtanggol Gunigundo, who wants the bill to known as the Pacquiao Act of 2013.
Under Section 3 of the bill, it says the "state shall confer lifetime individual income tax exemption to boxing icon Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao, also known as Manny Pacquiao, who has given outstanding honor and pride to the Filipino people.”
But Henares disputed this, saying that giving honor to a country is not enough basis for a tax exemption.

When money is being spent to reward a person for winning a sport that harms ones own body and another's body, for the sake of money, popularity and pride, we know there is something being missed. Common sense dictates this is us physically  abusing that which assist us to move and express ourselves.

We were taught in school and at home about the reward for doing good.

Manipulating the body to do or repeat that action which gives us fame, fortune, honor and pride to the detriment of the body is abuse of the body. This is not something 'worthy of a reward' because this is motivated by self-interest.

This perceived/believed superior deed is labelled as such because we defined ourselves as inferior.

Looking at the case here, the question we can ask ourselves is, how do we see the Philippines as a country without a 'famous athlete' behind our name?

Who are we as a country?

The essence of a country lies in the stand of each of us to give what is best for all of us to each other in this one life.

Let's look at the word 'reward':

Reward
n.
An act performed to strengthen approved behavior

We can expand this definition here by saying, a 'reward' is:

An act performed that will benefit all.

If we give all the chance to survive in dignity by giving all those who qualify a Liviing Income, Guaranteed, so they can get the basic necessities to survive to live in dignity, we are really creating a reward for ALL and not just a FEW.

The proposal of the Living Income Guaranteed to give all a living income will benefit all. Its proposal to remove personal taxes and instead retain sales tax and value added tax will benefit everyone.

One of the fundamental problems in the world in how crime develops is through tax and tax evasion and for that, specially companies employ lawyers to find loopholes in laws so that they can set up all kinds of foundations and charities with which to evade tax; and with which to influence the markets and the goods available to the consumer, to benefit their own bottom line. Now with Basic Income Guaranteed it is suggested that there is no tax at a personal level and no tax at a corporate level and that one only works with either sales tax or value added tax or, if necessary, with an import duty.

Pacquiao and Tax Evasion

In the news:

The battle between one of the best boxers in history and the taxman has shocked his army of fans in the Philippines, emerging just days after a comeback win in the ring was hailed as a moment of hope amid the aftermath of a deadly typhoon.
Pacquiao disclosed Tuesday the Bureau of Internal Revenue wanted 2.2 billion pesos ($50.2 million) for alleged unpaid taxes in 2008 and 2009, when he was at the peak of his career and one of the world's highest-earning athletes.
When people work to be able to get paid wages for them to survive, they do not want the revenue office to get a part of that because that will mean less money which equates to less ability to survive in a world of competition and so people employ the services of a lawyer/accountant to find out loopholes with which they can cut down on taxes.

Is this true also with the elite - those who earn millions of dollars?

Companies employ lawyers to find loopholes in laws so they can set up foundations and all kinds of charities with which to evade tax.
The charities give little help to people when they need it and then the goods or services stop. But what if we remove charity organizations that only give the 'less fortunate' a little bit of help and empower the 'less fortunate' to be equally fortunate as the rest of the human race by giving them a living income?
This will redefine the word 'help' in our vocabulary.
Here's the definition of the word 'help' from the wordweb:
v. Improve; change for the better
We can expand the definition of the word 'help' here:
improve or change inequality to equal dignified life for all
Let's give all a Living Income and say YES to the Living Income Guaranteed and solve the taxation problem:

One of the fundamental problems in the world in how crime develops is through tax and tax evasion and for that, specially companies employ lawyers to find loopholes in laws so that they can set up all kinds of foundations and charities with which to evade tax; and with which to influence the markets and the goods available to the consumer, to benefit their own bottom line. Now with Basic Income Guaranteed it is suggested that there is no tax at a personal level and no tax at a corporate level and that one only works with either sales tax or value added tax or, if necessary, with an import duty.
Charities and foundations should be eradicated because they are actually only duplicating the work that should have been done by the government – and the government being the people, the government is not a separate corporation and it is the social arm of the people. Therefore all the work done by charities is actually the work and responsibilities of the government of the citizens, for the citizens. And this duplication exists in order to be able to evade tax, placing governments under pressure to borrow more money, taking vast parts of the budget going towards interest is quite a foolish thing to do because that just makes the government more ineffective.
The most sought after jobs in the world should be those within the government that will require the highest level of expertise with very clear guidelines to ensure that the work delivered at all times is without question the best that can be. After all the foundation of respect between citizens is based on effectively delivering goods and services required to live. This is being hampered by the current methodology where especially profit and tax evasion plays a role and where the services of government are undermined – in many cases deliberately – simply to make profit quickly. This type of behavior which is a form of financial treason, should be outlawed in every way.
And therefore the positioning of accounting services really should be replaced by automation – this implies a universal software that is linked to the banking industry which is under Basic Income Guaranteed which automatically assesses the profit margins and automatically keeps a tap on the income to make sure that the minimum wage is always adhered to, as well as ensuring that nobody can defraud the system. The only reason why there is no transparency at any level when money moves is because there is dishonesty. Absolute transparency means nothing is hidden and one should also apply this within the context of the pricing of goods so that one ensures that when a company is operational, there is enough money moving to ensure everyone gets their wages and that there is sufficient profit for the investors, so that at the end of the day the sales tax and the value added tax are paid effectively. All of that can be automated, removing the human factor that at this stage causes so many problems, because of the temptation that still exists to abuse the use of resources for personal benefit. This will only be stopped in time through education and understanding how peace and harmony depend on our ability to trust one another.

Immigration: Pinay Traumatized In 'Horror' Trip To The US?

Immigration to the US is a problem Filipinos face when they decide to leave the Philippines for the so-called 'better life' in america.

In this blog i will look at a news article about a Filipina migrating to the US to attend her daughter's marriage.

There are many parts within this story but one that stands out is that, what the officer said and what the lady said contradicts each other.

'He claimed that he talked to her aunt, who allegedly told him that Grande will take care of her as a caregiver'

'She said the immigration officer's allegations are not true because her aunt didn't even know she was arriving in the US'
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/global-filipino/10/07/13/pinay-traumalized-horror-trip-us

A Filipina Facebook friend ask us to comment on this, so here's my perspective:

Note: have a look at the link if you need to read the news article

We have to investigate who is not telling the truth here.

If her aunt is telling the truth and she is coming to the US to be a caregiver with a US visitor visa, without a working visa, the officer will do what needs to be done according to the law.

But if she is telling the truth, that she just wants to attend her daughter's marriage, then what she can do is , she can file a lawsuit against the officers.

Looking at Immigration from the perspective of currency value, let's ask ourselves these questions:

Why we are migrating?

Is there a hidden agenda of self-interest within our mind to earn 'under-the-table money' within being employed as a care-giver or in any job when we get to the US?

If the answer to this question is, 'Yes', realize that this is fueled by Fear of surviving within having to deal with a currency that has 'lower value' than the dollar.

The peso having a 'lower value', we fear surviving in the Philipines believing that this is too little to survive on, so in our desire to go to the US and earn in Dollars which has 'more value,' we end up getting into all sorts of problem with Immigration including deportation.

We even end up marrying someone for immigration purposes and we accept and allow this to happen.

We have to look at how we can make living in the Philippines financially rewarding like maybe doubling the minimum wage and look at how everyone who needs one like the poor - how they can have a Basic or Living Income Guaranteed from birth to death

At the same time we have exchange rates, where certain countries have a high value currency and others a low value currency, which is then used to transfer resources between countries done under the disguise of corporations – which are owned by politicians – creating monopolies that cause extensive poverty. The fact is that this transfer of resources in theory should benefit all the citizens of a country.

Government Shutdown: Favorable Solution?

After my partner told me that there could be a government shutdown midnight last night, which is Oct.1, 2013,  i asked him what a government shutdown mean? He said he heard about a Government shutdown that happened in 1995 but did not really notice obvious economic or political changes at that time.

We are so preoccupied trying to survive in this world, that we do not notice what's going on around us. We are so used to seeing homeless people on the streets that we are only aware of something when it directly threatens our financial or physical survival.

We do not notice that the lives of the homeless are threatened daily on the streets by the weather, hunger, violence, abuse etc This daily grind to survive makes us apathetic to the suffering of others. We just drive cars going to Washington, wearing nice suits without taking a look at the homeless human sleeping on the streets with cardboard boxes to protect them from the cold. We agree or disagree with our fellow politicians without seeing that whatever decision we make will affect other's lives for 'better or worse'. We just do not care enough for Life because we are so used living Life caring only about ourselves, our family and our own groups or parties.

So, i watched CNN news to find out more about the Government shutdown and found the following explanation.

CNN) -- For the reigning super power and the largest economy in the world, it's an egg-on-your-face moment.
For the first time in 17 years, the U.S. government shut down as its democratically-elected politicians could not come to an agreement over a spending bill. This stalemate closed non-essential services, sending 800,000 federal workers home without pay as lawmakers bickered about who was to blame. The shutdown could cost the economy about $1 billion a week.
The clash between Republicans and Democrats rages over the 2010 Affordable Care Act, the signature health care law of U.S. President Barack Obama.
http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/01/world/shutdown-in-tweets/index.html?sr=sharebar_facebook

Is this a disagreement between 2 political parties over Obama Care?

Blaming each other?

Next time we elect a government official we have to be sure that these people will be able to decide from the basis of what will benefit all - the citizens, and not decide according to what is best for ones interest - political, financial etc.

Can you imagine if in your own family for example, when your parents cannot agree with one another with regards to the monthly budget because your father wants to buy a healthcare insurance but your mother does not agree with him and she says the price of this insurance coverage is so much, and as a result of this, the living room is locked down? Fortunately it will not be the kitchen nor the toilet, otherwise it would be a problem, because if you cannot use the toilet when you wake up in the morning in your own house, that will be a problem.

The fact is that all these politicians have money and will not lose their job.

The question is:
In this 'tug-of-war' happening within the Government shutdown, some are winning and some are losing. The ego wins. The ones with money win. The politicians have money and will retain their jobs. They win.

But in essence, we all lose because  there are people who will be out of jobs, the poor will still be poor and government agencies will have less employees to process documents we need. Depending on the length of this 'impasse' if this will go on for weeks or months, this will impact the economy and can affect trading with other countries etc.

I am questioning the starting point of these political decisions made by the politicians involved in this Government shutdown.

First of all, there are the poor sleeping on the sidewalk while the politicians and the elite sleep in warm beds going to the White house and Congress driving cars and the people who voted for them are now looking at them and wondering why they are just concerned about their own political party politics when in their campaign speeches they promised us they will uphold what is best for us, the citizens?

But, in as much as there are people who says the shutdown will be devastating to the economy, i was surprised that this investment banker said 'it is a healthy thing':

In this blog, i will go over the interview done by Bloomberg TV's "Market Maker's" to Ken Moelis, Founder and CEO of Moelis & Co, former UBS Investment Bank President.

The newscaster asked him this Question :
If you are down there, not that you will get paid by now, what will you be telling this guys to do? How will you bring them to the table to finally agree on something?

This is what he said:

'Well look, let's be clear, when corporations negotiate its often a win-win situation, you try to put them together, 2 entities trying to accomplish the same thing - profits for the shareholders, its a whole different thing.'

He continued on to say...

'I see this as an unbelievably healthy thing, because there's no other country in the world that has this level of debate over serious topics. We're talking about 1/6th of our economy on the future of health care, probably the single most important decision everyone of us will make from here for the rest of our lives and in no other time in the world will we have this level of debate over principle, philosophy.....'

'I think there is a fundamental philosophical differences, this is not a minor difference..how the health care system is run. This is what governments do, and by the way i walked here it's a beautiful day, there's no tanks in the streets, everybody seems to be moving, nobody called, if this is a parliamentary government we probably have called a vote of no confidence and had a new election, this is actually why the United States is the best place to invest in the world because we can continually debate the future of our government and our policies and we can do it the way we're doing it right now.'

'I believe the only way to fix these things is to bring Free market principles into these things right now.'

'Go to a hospital someday and when they ask you for a test ask what the price is. It will be 3 days before they can tell you the price.and price is an important function, so who do i side with? I'll side with anything that pushes these decisions down to the individual so that they can decide how they would individually spend their money in the marketplace to get the solution they want.'

' I think the economy is growing less than we like i mean, some 2 percent in GDP but i see the innovation and the corporations that we deal with are on their front foot. They are trying to figure out how to bring down cost, how to consolidate, how to bring synergy that's why the m and m market - it is what i wouldn't call booming but it is vibrant again '

'I do think that if GDP will go up 3-4 % we'll have you know you get back to booming but well you get back to more robust, i wont say blooming but i think you have a pretty healthy business environment. People are trying to use creativity, innovation to overcome what is a low growth environment. '

http://www.bloomberg.com/video/shutdown-unbelievably-healthy-for-u-s-moelis-Io_IjgOwQRujdCmmx2mLvg.html?cmpid=otbrn.video

I am questioning the investment banker's perspective in the interview above this blog.

He's an investment guy so he has experienced being in a negotiation, but we have to investigate what he said and ask ourselves,

Is this best for all or just best for the few - the elite?

Who is winning when corporations negotiate'?

The 2 corporations win.

But where does the money go?

To both corporations.

Both these 2 corporations win, because winning means how much money you have in this world system. the share holders win.

From the amount of money you have will be measured your survival in this world.

What this really mean is that the elite wins.

The water and the oil corporation executives has to ask themselves, if we are profiting from the resources given by the earth, we have to give the poor a share to all these profits, because the resources of the earth was given to all of us here. But would they? no.

Who loses?

The poor who continues to be poor. In essence we all lose because we affect each other because we are part of the whole that is Life, where when one lose,We All Lose.

Investigate the real solution that is best for all because essentially, it is also what is best for the individual:
Basic/Living Income Guaranteed

Attack In Zamboanga, Philippines and The Impending War In Syria: Money Behind War

The Mindanao problem where there's fighting between Christians and Muslims in one part of the Philippines had been happening since i was young and it's still here 30 yrs later.

Nur Misuari is again mentioned in the news recently.

Why is this a recurring problem?

Who is Nur Misuari?

Misuari was a lecturer at the University of the Philippines in political science and in the 1960s, he established the Mindanao Independence Movement which aimed to organize an independent state in southern Philippines. The Mindanao Independence Movement formed the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) that sought political reforms from the Government of the Philippines. Unable to gain reforms, the MNLF engaged in military conflict against the Philippine government and its supporters between 1972 to 1976 under the leadership of Misuari. The military resistance to the government of former Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos did not produce autonomy for the Moro people. He departed to Saudi Arabia in exile. He returned to the Philippines after Marcos was removed from office during the People Power Revolution in 1986.

Misuari justified the MNLF armed struggle on the non-implementation of the Tripoli Agreement, originally signed by Ferdinand Marcos and later included and accepted in the peace agreement signed by former Philippine president Fidel Ramos in the 1990s. This agreement established an autonomous region for Moros with Misuari as governor. He was removed from his office whenGloria Macapagal-Arroyo became president in 2001 and was arrested in 2007 on charges of terrorism. On December 20, 2007 he was denied a petition for bail and remained under house arrest in Manila. The Philippine court however, granted the bail petition of Misuari's seven co-accused, at 100,000 pesos.[1] On April 25, 2008, he was allowed to post bail, upon the instructions of the Cabinet security cluster.[2]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nur_Misuari

According to the GMA news published n Sept. 11, 2013, Misuari's followers attacked Zamboanga City in the Philippines

'Last month, Misuari declared independence in his Sulu stronghold. His followers attacked Zamboanga City last Monday, resulting in a standoff with the military that is now on its third day.'

http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/326045/news/nation/gov-t-panel-denies-disregarding-misuari-mnlf-in-peace-process

In the same news article, it was said that it was Not the whole MNLF that attacked Zamboanga

'Last week, the Secretary said their facilitator from Indonesia came to the Philippines and met with the government panel and two MNLF groups to tell them that they will be holding a meeting in Indonesia.

A few days after that, however, Misuari's followers attacked Zamboanga City.

"It is a violation of what one has said on that table that, in fact, a tripartite meeting was the process that would address these problems," she said.

Deles said they have already informed the Indonesian Embassy about the attack.

But she immediately noted that it was important to "recognize" that it wasn't the whole MNLF that attacked Zamboanga.

"Other senior MNLF leaders have spoken and said that we have not, we are not supportive of this, this is Misuari acting on his own," she said.'

Let's look at What's In the 'Peace Deal'

Peace Deal
http://www.unpo.org/article/14993

The Philippines has signed a framework peace plan with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the country’s largest Muslim group. Signed by the chief of negotiators of the government and of the MILF, and witnessed by President Benigno Aquino and MILF leader Murad Ebrahim, this peace deal provides for a new autonomous region in the south of the country, a Muslim-majority area which is to be called Bangsamoro.
The Moro people have been systematically marginalised and victimised in an overwhelmingly Roman Catholic country.  Not only have they been subjected to discriminatory employment and housing policies throughout the centuries, but they have also been frequently misportrayed in the media. The escalating tensions between the Philippine government and the Moro people have been fuelled in the last half a century by the illegal annexation of the Moro’s land by Christian-Filipino militias such as the Ilaga. This not only resulted in a gradual displacement of the Moro from their homeland, changing the demographics of the area but has also meant that the region has become impoverished and underdeveloped.
After nearly 40 years of conflict and the loss of around 120,00 lives, it was agreed on 15 October 2012 that the new region of Bangsamoro is to replace the existing region that was created in 1989 and has recently been depicted by President Aquino as a ‘failed experiment’.
The preliminary pact delineates the principles for addressing the so-called Bangsamoro question, determining the jurisdiction and structures of a new self-governance entity that will replace and have greater power, both political and economic, than the current Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). It also lays down the foundations upon which the new relations between the Central government and the one in Bangsamoro will be forged.

So, we can see here that we have to face the consequence of what we accept and allow in this world.

We have to walk as equals.

Otherwise, we will have to face the problems of a world that is divided, grouped according to religious affiliations, according to what we like and what we do not like etc.

While we negotiate with one group for an agreement another group will disagree and will want to attack us.

Self-interest is the name of the war game.

We avoid the real issues in our failing economy through war and that is true in the Philippine scene and in the US -Syria situation.

Let's address the main problem: Poverty and Inequality.

When are we going to look at what will benefit everyone?

The news indicate that the US is said to be considering attacking Syria and so even if we have peace in the Philippines and all of these issues about secessionist movements in Mindanao gets resolved, if Obama pushes through with war with Syria we will all be affected.

The OFW's from the middle East has now returned to the Philippines because of the impending war in Syria. Where are they going to get money from?

Where will the people who will be affected by war get money and food? If there are agencies helping how long will the assistance going to be? It will be for a limited time, so why not assisting all from birth to death so all will survive?

We have to realize that our fear of survival is driving our desire for war and interestingly enough our desire for peace also comes from the same fear.

We have to see that this is the polarity equation in our minds we are living in reality.

One cannot survive without the other.

We have to look at our fear. Fear of survival drives us to compete to win.

Let us look at the value we give each other and the value we give Money.

Humans, plants, animals etc. are given a value less than Life. Money is given a value that is less than Life.

We cannot see that Money can be given a value equal to Life. We can use money to benefit all.

Why do we separate each other into self-interest groups when every decision we make affect us all? Why do we divide the earth's land and claim one part as ours and defend it using weapons that kill human, plant and animal life? Why do we destroy the ecosystem that support us to survive?

Why do we do this?

There's a lot of Money to be made in war.
'As they say, follow the money'

REAL World Peace is about us caring for what is benefit all not just one group or country but all groups and all countries.

What about us working together as one group called Team Life looking at the inequality that is here and providing a solution that will benefit all - where we can walk as equals so all equally survive and enjoy life?

We have to provide the basic necessities for everyone to Live a dignified Life.

We have to look at nationalizing resources and creating dividends sufficient to pay for a Basic/Living Income, Guaranteed from birth to death.

We have to realize that we all have an equal Land Right.

An Equal Land Right that places every living being on the land they choose to call their home, where living bodies walk upon the soil from which their lives are nourished and sustained, that provides both security and sustenance, that engages with the animal and plant kingdoms in interactive concert that becomes harmonious with the life force of all beings and all of life equal as one.
